For my third-year project whilst studying for my Masters at the University of Southampton, I decided to make a hybrid switching-linear bench power supply.
The PSU takes an input from a laptop style charger and first provides a buck regulator to efficiently drop the voltage to near the desired output and then uses an analog front-end to achieve the final current and voltage regulation. A PSoC 4 from Cypress was used as the main controller and all it’s analog peripherals were utilised for a lot of the control portion.
Extensive simulation in LTSpice was performed to fully characterise the performance and make sure the system was stable under all conditions such as load steps.
